-Immigration Options 101: Immigrant victim/survivors of domestic and sexual violence often experience substantial barriers when escaping an abusive situation.  Their undocumented immigration status can be a significant deterrent to seeking safety.  There are several forms of relief and pathways to legal status that may be available to an immigrant survivor. This training will an overview of the immigration relief available to immigrant victim/survivors of domestic and sexual violence and trafficking, including recognition of client eligibility and the immigration process.

-Safety Planning with Immigrant Victim/Survivors: This training will focus on specific considerations when safety planning with immigrant victim/survivors of violence, including how to talk with clients about their immigration status. We will also discuss a person’s legal rights when approached by ICE and how to respond to ICE when at work, at home, and when in public spaces. We will discuss creating a family preparedness plan so that parents have a strategy in place for what to do about a child’s care if they are arrested, detained, or deported. We will share personal experiences around providing advocacy to a community in the midst of a mass immigration raid.

-Intersection of Immigration and Family Law: Immigrants navigating family court may have questions about their rights and concerns about how their status may impact the process. Immigrant victim/survivors of domestic abuse may have also faced threats that their citizenship status will be used against them should they choose to proceed in family court or with a civil protective order. This training provides information to help you understand how family court actions can limit and impact available immigration relief, learn how immigration status is and is not relevant to family court actions, learn options to protect children and victims, and understand the potential challenges if an immigrant client wishes to relocate. This training will also include a discussion of practical tips that advocates and litigants can utilize.
